Liverpool news: Kieran Maguire lambasts ‘slimy, insidious little project’ as court ruling looms

The Super League project once backed by Liverpool is losing all credibility with one of only three of its remaining backers now in turmoil.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the developing scandal involving Juventus.

As confirmed last Monday (28 November), Andre Agnelli, the club’s chairman and one of the chief architects of last April’s aborted Super League, has resigned alongside the rest of the Juve board.

The club recently posted record financial losses and have been caught up in controversy regarding alleged false accounting, market manipulation and fabricated financial statements.

The Old Lady are one of just three teams – the other two being Real Madrid and Barcelona – who still publicly support the Super League.

A22 Sports Management, the company behind the rebel league, have recently ramped up their PR offensive with a view to relaunching the competition under a revised format.

Liverpool confirmed in October that their stance on the competition has not changed, but that was before Fenway Sports Group announced their intentions to sell the club last month.

Maguire assessed how the news from Turin will impact the fate of the Super League, citing an upcoming ruling from the European Court of Justice as a potential death knell for the competition.

“The little credibility the Super League franchise had has further been eroded by Agneilli’s decision to resign,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“What’s worse is that he tried to put it across in a press release that he was trying to do the club a favour.

“We will watch subsequent events with growing interest. Remember, the ruling by the European Court’s rulings with regards to the Super League is likely to have some form of verdict in mid-December.

“What has happened can only further call into question the integrity and moral fibre of the people behind this insidious slimy little project.”
