Liverpool news: LeBron James told to intervene after source’s ‘huge’ Mohamed Salah update – pundit

Liverpool cannot afford to let Mohamed Salah not sign a new contract over an extra £100,000-a-week, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker called on LeBron James to “chip in” and help keep Salah at Anfield.

A source close to the club told Football Insider on Saturday (14 May) that the 29-year-old has compromised on his £500,000-a-week demands and there is hope an agreement is close.

A new contract would still represent a “huge” outlay of over £80million over four years and make the Egyptian superstar one of the world’s best-paid players.

His current deal is set to expire at the end of next season alongside fellow forwards Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

But Agbonlahor has claimed Salah’s contract is the most important and minority shareholder James should intervene to keep him on Merseyside.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Listen I love Jota, I love Mane, I love Diaz but Salah is Salah.

“He is the talisman, Mr. Liverpool. He has to sign a new contract, Liverpool cannot let him go.

“They need to get LeBron James to chip in and pay some of it to make it happen.

“You can’t afford to lose Salah and his goals, you just can’t. Not over an argument of an extra £100,000-a-week.”

Despite Salah’s form trailing off since the turn of the year, he still has 46 goal contributions in 49 games across all competitions.

He has only found the net three times in his last 18 domestic appearances across all competitions.
