Liverpool news: New Trent Alexander-Arnold injury fear after confirmed news – pundit

Noel Whelan has urged Jurgen Klopp not to play Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool versus Watford or Benfica to ensure he is fit against Manchester City.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 23-year-old needs to be rested fully after coming back from a hamstring injury.

Speaking at his press conference today (Friday, 1 April), Klopp confirmed Alexander-Arnold is set to return to full training ahead of Saturday’s game with Watford.

The Reds then face Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday before visiting Man City for a top-of-the-table Premier League clash next Sunday (10 April).

Whelan insisted Liverpool should take no risks and leave Alexander-Arnold out until they play City.

“No game for him Saturday. Save him for the following week,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“I think the player will guide the physio. They’ll come up with the most sensible decision on the day and during that week, that’s for sure.

“Would you like him out there? Absolutely. He’s one of the most assisting players in the team, along with Robertson on the left-hand side.

“It tells you how they play and how demanding that role is going to be from box to box.

“With the intensity they play at and the intensity Man City play at when they get into that final third, he’s got to be 100 per cent for that game.

“When you’re chasing Grealish or Sterling down that line, you’ll soon find out whether it’s not 100 per cent right. You’ve got to turn twist, jump, land and sprint.

“If fit, he plays. It’s as simple as that for me. That is pretty much a title decider, isn’t it? It puts one team in the driving seat.”
