Liverpool news: Pundit baffled by ‘upsetting’ Alisson Becker decision after confirmed news

Frank McAvennie is baffled as to why Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has not been nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker claimed 29-year-old will be “upset” to have been left out of the shortlist.

On 12 August, Liverpool confirmed that six players from their current team have been nominated for the prestigious award.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, Fabinho, Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk all appear on the 30-man shortlist for the individual prize.

Former Reds forward Sadio Mane was also on the shortlist.

The Daily Mail reported (13 August) that Alisson has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or Yashin trophy for the best goalkeeper.

McAvennie suggested the shot-stopper will be disappointed to have missed out on a nomination for the main award.

I think he will be annoyed,” he told Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen.

I don’t think Trent will be anywhere near it. Don’t get me wrong, I love Trent. I think he’s a great player Is he good enough to get the Ballon d’Or? No.

Van Dijk, yes, Salah, yes. In that company Becker will be disappointed. He’ll be wondering why not. I can understand him being a wee bit upset but he’ll get on with it and think he can have another chance next year.
