Liverpool news: Pundit fears Reds could miss out on next Alexander-Arnold after major ‘blow’

Young attackers in the Liverpool academy have “no chance” of breaking into the first team.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Reds’ attacking options.

Liverpool signed Luis Diaz in January, joining Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota as attacking options available to Jurgen Klopp.

The Columbian has already made six appearances for the club and helped his side win the Carabao Cup on Sunday (27 February).

With another quality option available to Klopp, McAvennie claims Liverpool’s young attackers will struggle to make an impact at the club.

“It’s hard luck if you are a young attacker wanting to make it into that Liverpool team, it’s a blow for them,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That’s a front five they have now and they only play three. So where are the chances for the young players to come through?

“I know it’s not the first thing on their mind at the moment but as long as those contracts get signed there is no chance of them breaking in.

“It will have to be loans, which isn’t that bad really. But you see so many young players come through now and just go straight into the first team.

“That’s what happened with Alexander-Arnold and look how good he is.

“I don’t know if there are any young Liverpool attackers who might be close to making that step up, I bet there are though.

“That path to the first team just got a lot harder.”
