Liverpool news: Pundit fumes at FA with Harvey Elliott facing potential ‘travesty’

Liverpool star Harvey Elliott should not be punished for his celebrations after his side won the Carabao Cup.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the FA’s potential next move.

Elliott picked up a smoke flare thrown by a Liverpool fan onto the Wembley pitch after their Carabao Cup final shootout victory over Chelsea last Sunday (27 February).

Sky Sports News reported on Monday (28 February) the FA had written to the 18-year-old for his observations on the incident.

McAvennie can’t believe Elliott could be facing punishment for his actions.

“You have got to be joking, he’s just a kid,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s just won a major trophy, let him have a bit of fun. We should see more things like that.

“Otherwise you are taking the passion out of the game.

“He’s had a really tough season with the big injury and his team has just won a trophy.

“What is he meant to do? I really hope nothing comes of this that would be a travesty. He would be hard done by if he gets a punishment.

“I don’t think anyone wants to see him get banned or fined or whatever else.

“Just let him have some fun, as I say, he’s only a kid.”

Liverpool

Elliott has only made nine appearances for Liverpool this season after suffering an injury against Leeds on 12 September.

He played 40 minutes in the Carabao Cup Final.

In other news, Liverpool are well on course to make extraordinary £550million-plus announcement.
