Liverpool news: Pundit issues ‘100 per cent’ verdict as Mohamed Salah controversy analysed

Paul Robinson has backed Everton manager Frank Lampard over his controversial post-match comments at Liverpool on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England number one is adamant the Reds would have been awarded a penalty if one of their players had been challenged similarly to Anthony Gordon.

As shown on Sky Sports (25 April), Gordon went to ground after contact from Joel Matip in the second half of Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Anfield.

However, referee Stuart Attwell decided not to award a penalty and VAR official Darren England did not intervene.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (24 April), Lampard suggested the officials are biased.

He claimed the penalty would have been given had the roles reversed and Mohamed Salah was the player appealing for a penalty.

When asked by Football Insider for his take on the incident, Robinson said: “If that is at the other end Liverpool get the decision, 100 per cent.

“I guarantee if that’s a red shirt, in front of the Kop, the referee would pointed to the spot.

“It was difficult for Frank after the game because emotions were running high. When you are in the bottom three if feels like everything goes against you. It is an extremely emotional and volatile situation. If Frank was questioned now he would answer it in the same well. I think he handled himself very well.

“I agree that it would have been given if it was Salah. The officials got that one terribly wrong.

“For Everton, an apology doesn’t mean anything. They had that earlier on in the season against Man City for what was a stonewall handball from Rodri. An apology does no good for Everton.

“These decisions could have huge implications for them. They’ve been victim twice this year.”
