Liverpool news: Pundit issues ‘big’ Roberto Firmino claim as source reveals Klopp plans

Roberto Firmino still has a “big part” to play for Liverpool ahead of new contract negotiations, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Scotland international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 30-year-old could help younger players as the Reds look to “refresh” their side.

As revealed by Football Insider last Saturday (12 February), Liverpool are set to offer Firmino a new contract ahead of the summer.

An Anfield source told this site Klopp is a huge admirer of the Brazilian and wants him to commit to a contract extension.

The German manager’s plan to tie Firmino down comes despite the recent arrival of Luis Diaz and talks to sign Fabio Carvalho from Fulham.

However, Hutton insisted the Brazil international has a lot to offer on and off the pitch.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “They’re thinking about the future, with Diaz, Jota, talks for Carvalho. These guys could be the future of Liverpool.

“But I still think you have to have the players that have been there for a long time. They know the club, they’ve been loyal, they’ve produced on the big stage and still have a lot to give.

“Firmino’s only 30. It’s not like we’re not talking about a 35-year-old and they’re giving him a four-year contract. He’s still got a lot to give, he’s going to play his part.

“So I think it’s good Liverpool are looking to refresh and the long term goals and plans.

“But, here and now, Firmino’s still got a big part to play. I think it’s a good move. I think the other players can learn off Firmino as well so it’s a good situation for player and club to be in.”

Firmino scored his eighth goal of the season in Wednesday’s win over Inter Milan.

He has started 13 times in 24 appearances this term.
