Liverpool news: Pundit issues ‘dog fight’ claim as Joel Matip footage analysed
Frank McAvennie has claimed Liverpool are in a “dog fight” in the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker is worried for Jurgen Klopp’s side because they are “getting exposed” in every game.
As shown on Sky Sports (5 February), Joel Matip tried to defend Hee-Chan Hwang’s attempt to get the ball into the box for Wolves but the shot ricocheted off the Liverpool defender and into the back of the net.
Things continued to get worse for the Reds, conceding a second goal less than 15 minutes into the game and going on to lose 3-0 at the Molineux.
As relayed by Opta (4 February), Klopp’s side have conceded more goals in the opening five minutes of a Premier League match than any other side.
McAvennie is worried about the Merseysiders’ troubling run.
“People are getting exposed, the defence is getting exposed,” he told Football Insider.
“Matip scored that own goal, sometimes when you are in that dog fight that is what happens.
“It is not a relegation fight but it is a dog fight in the sense that Liverpool should be up there challenging for the top spot and they are not.“

The Reds have been without Virgil van Dijk since the 3-1 defeat to Brentford last month (2 January).
But according to journalist James Pearce, as relayed by Anfield Watch (6 February), the centre-back is expected to return to full training this week.
In other news, according to sources, Liverpool hold preliminary takeover talks with £373billion sovereign wealth fund.
