Liverpool news: Pundit issues ‘massive’ Mohamed Salah claim after ‘side show nobody wanted’
Paul Robinson has claimed Mohamed Salah’s contract renewal “is massive” for Liverpool ahead of the new season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the 30-year-old’s future was “a side show nobody wanted” last season or next.
On 1 July, Liverpool announced Salah had penned a new three-year contract at Anfield.
As revealed by Football Insider (2 July), the Egypt international will earn £62.4million in wages over the course of the deal.
Salah’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of June 2023.
When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the news, Robinson said: “The situation was a side show that nobody wanted or needed last season and certainly didn’t want this season.
“It is massive for Liverpool to get his contract done and sorted. Given the situation with Sadio Mane, they would not have wanted Salah and Roberto Firmino both heading into the final year of their contracts. The uncertainty would not have been helpful.
“Salah was not the same player after the African Cup of Nations. He did not score the goals we expected from him. He struggled for form but other stepped up and score the goals.
“The contract situation certainly didn’t help him though. Everyone knows where they are at now.
“If Liverpool had lost Mane and Salah in this window it would have been a huge dent in their side.

“With Salah signing and [Darwin] Nunez arriving they could potentially be even stronger than last season. It will be interesting.
“Salah’s contract is the biggest signing Liverpool will make for a long time.”
