Liverpool news: Everton idol issues ‘unbelievable’ Virgil van Dijk claim after ‘horrific injury’

Kevin Campbell has claimed Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is “back to his best” following a “horrific injury” last season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker heaped praise on the 30-year-old for his “unbelievable” display at Wembley on Sunday.

Van Dijk starred for the Reds in a penalty shootout win over Chelsea in the League Cup final.

He joins an elite club as only the third player to have been awarded the man of the match award in a League Cup and Champions League final after Didier Drogba and Steve McManaman.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Van Dijk had proven that he’s back to his best, Campbell said:

“Van Dijk had a horrific injury and it was always going to take him time to get back to his best. He was the best centre-half in the world before he got injured.

“It has taken him a little bit of time but he is back to his best, of that I have no doubt. He’s strengthened Liverpool so much this season.

“What a quality player he is and he proved that at the weekend. He was unbelievable up against a really good Chelsea side.

“[Kai] Havertz and [Romelu] Lukaku are not easy to play against. Fair play to him.”
