Liverpool news: Pundit lambasts ‘shocking’ controversy as ‘disgusting’ footage emerges
Alan Hutton has demanded “change” from UEFA after the “disgusting” treatment of Liverpool fans at the Champions League final.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland international shot down claims from French ministers that ticket fraud was to blame for the “shocking” scenes in Paris.
In a statement issued on Monday (30 May), Uefa confirmed they have commissioned an independent inquiry into the incidents that marred Saturday’s game between Liverpool and Real Madrid.
In footage relayed by Eurosport (29 May), police used pepper spray and tear gas on groups of fans waiting to access the stadium.
Hutton, who says he saw similar issues “first hand” at the Europa League final in Seville, slammed Uefa for their lack of organisational skills.
Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s absolutely shocking. I witnessed it first-hand in Seville (with Rangers). You’re thinking to yourself: ‘What is going on here?’
“You have had a year to get this organised. You know the amount of people that are going to turn up. It doesn’t matter which club. Even if there were a small minority that had fake tickets, that probably happens at every single event in the world. It doesn’t mean you treat people this way.
“There was obviously a problem going on and they couldn’t handle it. They didn’t have the powers to be there to sort it out. It was disgusting. We are talking about using tear gas on kids, children, old men and women. for what reason? It was absolutely shocking.
“There just seems to be this kind of culture where you go away, abroad, to play a game of football. If you’re an English fan, a Scottish fan, whatever, you get treated a little bit different as if they’re scared if you act up. It’s disgusting. Something has to change.”
