Liverpool news: Pundit laments ‘massive’ VAR blunder as ITV footage emerges

Alan Hutton has insisted VAR has to get things right in “massive” moments after Wolves were denied a winning goal against Liverpool on Saturday (7 January).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said VAR will always have its problems but it needs to be improved.

As shown on ITV (7 January), Toti Gomes thought he had bagged the winner for Wolves in the FA Cup clash, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.

The decision by the on-field assistant referee was upheld by the VAR system overseeing the match, despite no camera angle being available to confirm the decision and the game finished 2-2.

A similar issue occurred at the Emirates back in October when Arsenal welcomed Liverpool to the Emirates.

An error with VAR meant they were unable to check a potential offside by Bukayo Saka in the lead up to Gabriel Martinelli’s goal.

Hutton insisted it is imperative that the technology works in these moments.

I think problems are always going to arise, the next step is can we fix it?” he told Football Insider.

It happened at the Emirates for Arsenal as well so it has happened in the past. These are big moments.

You think of Wolves, a victory would have been massive for them. It is huge so you have to get it correct.

If you bring in the technology you need to remember that things will go wrong at certain periods of time. It is about trying to take the next step and get better.

It is something that they will obviously have to look at and get right for next time. It means so much to teams so it has to be spot on.
