Liverpool news: Pundit rubbishes Gary Neville claim about Trent Alexander-Arnold – ‘done nothing wrong’

Paul Robinson has claimed Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold will be no more than a substitute for the remainder of the World Cup.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one refuted the idea that the 24-year-old should be in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI.

Alexander-Arnold was a second-half substitute in England’s 3-0 win over Wales on Tuesday (29 November).

The right-back had not featured for the Three Lions up to that point, with Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker preferred.

As quoted by the Mirror (25 November), ex-England coach and now pundit Gary Neville suggested Alexander-Arnold should be a starter.

He claimed “France, Spain and Brazil” would have the Liverpool defender “in their starting 11.”

When asked by Football Insider if he agreed with Neville’s viewpoint, Robinson said: “I cannot see Alexander-Arnold coming into the team.

“Trippier and Walker have done nothing wrong. One of those will start against Senegal.

“Trippier is a very good defender who is also a great set-piece taker. His all-round game outweighs what Trent gives you offensively.

“Trippier and Walker are reliable. There is no reason to change it in my opinion.

“We are in the knockout stages now. You cannot experiment. I don’t think there will be many major changes of personnel from now on unless there are injuries.”
