Liverpool news: Pundit suggests real reason for Christopher Nkunku snub

Frank McAvennie has suggested Jurgen Klopp didn’t want to risk bringing Christopher Nkunku to Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted Klopp knows the kind of players he needs better than anyone.

According to the Daily Telegraph (4 January), the Reds turned down the chance to sign the 25-year-old last summer, which ultimately paved the way form him to join Chelsea.

The France international will move to Stamford Bridge in the summer after the Blues agreed a £63million fee with RB Leipzig last month.

The Merseysiders are said to have been offered Nkunku and he was thought to be a potential long-term replacement Roberto Firmino, given his ability to play anywhere along the front line.

But Klopp and his assistant Pep Lijnders decided to turn down the opportunity.

When asked if Klopp could regret his decision now Nkunku will be joining one of their Premier League rivals, McAvennie told Football Insider:I do not think so.

Klopp knows his players better than anyone. They could find out everything about him and he might just not fit in to what Klopp wants.

No matter how much of a wonderful player he is he might not fit into Liverpool. I do not know if Klopp wanted to go and spend a lot of money on someone they were not too sure about.

Liverpool

Liverpool are currently three points ahead of Chelsea in the Premier League table.

The Blues have a chance to close that gap when they face Fulham on Thursday (12 January).
