Liverpool news: Roberto Firmino can turn Luis Diaz into a ‘superstar’ after source’s reveal

Liverpool are right to offer Roberto Firmino a new deal despite his lack of goals in recent seasons.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid an update on the Brazilian’s future.

A Liverpool source told Football Insider on Saturday (12 February) that the club are set to offer Firmino a new contract ahead of the summer window.

The source explained Klopp remains a huge admirer of the 3–year-old and believes he still has a big role to play over the coming seasons.

Firmino‘s current deal will expire at the end of next season along with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane’s deals.

McAvennie insists Firmino is still a vital cog in the Liverpool machine despite the hitman only scoring 16 goals in his last 71 outings for the club.

“You look at Jota and he’s the one scoring goals right now,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“But he can’t do what Firmino does. He’s always been so good at that linkup play that has been vital to Liverpool’s success in recent years.

“Liverpool don’t really have another player who can do that so he’s worth keeping around.

“He does also chip in with important goals, even if he isn’t as prolific as Mane or Salah.

“There are also a few players coming through now, like Diaz. Firmino can teach him the ways and turn him into a superstar if you like.

“He’s still a quality player, get it done.”

Firmino has made 23 appearances in all competitions this season.

However, he hasn’t scored in the league since he bagged a hat-trick against Watford on 16 October.
