Liverpool news: Robinson ‘cannot understand’ latest twist in Sadio Mane transfer saga

Paul Robinson is baffled by Sadio Mane’s desire to leave Liverpool and approach to doing so.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England goalkeeper said the 30-year-old must be careful “not to burn his bridges before he has crossed them.”

Mane has just over one year remaining on his contract at Anfield.

As quoted by Sky Sports (3 June), the winger alluded to leaving the Reds when he said he’d “do what the Senegalese people want” this summer.

According to The Times‘ Paul Joyce (5 June), Liverpool have rejected an opening £25million offer from the Bayern Munich for Mane.

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to Mane’s comments, Robinson said: “I just don’t understand it.

“I find it such a strange situation.

“The situation is the best it has been in a number of years at Liverpool. They are competing for every single trophy. If it wasn’t for Man City they would have won the Premier League at a canter.

“For some reason though, Mane has expressed his desire to leave. He will have his own reasons.

“It will be a difficult deal to put together. He only has 12 months left on his contract but it will be a difficult deal to put together.

“He clearly wants a fresh challenge and a new start.

“You have to be very careful when you speak openly in the press like that though. He is contracted to Liverpool.

“There will only be two or three teams who can afford his wages and transfer fee. He needs to be careful not to burn his bridges before he has crossed them.”
