Kieran Maguire: Liverpool owners FSG will not be happy after PSG chief issues statement

Liverpool could earn as much from the new Uefa TV deal as they would from the Super League – but FSG themselves will be far worse off.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the European Club Association General Assembly.

The ECA, of which Liverpool are a prominent member, met in Vienna for their annual convention on Tuesday (29 March).

The meeting came almost exactly a year after the formation and near-immediate collapse of the breakaway Super League competition.

Uefa have since announced a new broadcast deal worth £12.6billion over its three-year life cycle.

ECA chief and Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi claimed that the new deal will be as lucrative as the Super League, per SportPro on Wednesday (30 March).

But Maguire explains that FSG would have benefited more from the terms of the Super League arrangement.

“The advantage of Super League was that you didn’t have to finish in the top four to get Champions League,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“You get five times more from the Champions League than you do in the Europa League.

“FSG aren’t necessarily football fans but they do have a lot interest in making money.

“The other advantage of Super League is that they were proposing to cap wages at 55 per cent of revenue.

“That would make more money for the owners, and we have got to separate the club from the owners here.

“Everything in Super League was geared towards making more money for the owners.

“We say in the world of finance that revenue is for show and profit is for grow.

“It’s difficult to say with any certainty how much money the Super League would have made because they never announced their broadcast partners.

“But it was the other issues that were the beneficiaries for the owners rather than the fans or the club’s overall revenues.”
