Liverpool ready to sign new striker after Darwin Nunez ‘offer’ news – sources

Liverpool are planning to add a new striker to their squad in the off-season amid questions over Darwin Nunez’s future, sources have told Football Insider.

New Reds boss Arne Slot and director of football Richard Hughes started work at Anfield over the weekend and are now pressing ahead with their plans for the summer transfer window.

Nunez will be under the magnifying glass when he returns for pre-season training within weeks, with Football Insider revealing last month (24 May) that Liverpool could listen to offers for the forward.

It is believed Slot is so far unconvinced about his ability to fit into his new-look Liverpool side.

The Dutchman is planning to bolster his attacking arsenal with the signing of a new forward – a move which could limit Nunez’s game time even further.

Nunez, 24, has attracted criticism from fans and pundits for his form since arriving at Liverpool from Benfica in 2022.

Klopp persisted with the Uruguay international in the 2023-24 campaign ahead of the likes of Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo.

He started 33 times in 54 total appearances this term, notching 18 goals and 13 assists.

As per FBRef, Nunez was one of the most wasteful strikers in the Premier League in the 2023-24 season – underperforming his xG by 4.5 goals across the campaign.

He cost a reported £85million two years ago and is under contract at Anfield until June 2028.

Slot will also have strikers Jota and Gakpo to call upon when he sets up his new-look Liverpool in pre-season.
