Kieran Maguire: European rivals terrified of Liverpool as £211m news confirmed

Juventus are terrified of the wealth of Premier League juggernauts like Liverpool – and that is why it is impossible to rule out continued attempts to relaunch the European Super League.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest damning news from behind the scenes at Juventus, one of the clubs who still back the Super League plot.

As relayed by Football Italia on Tuesday (27 December), Juventus shareholders have approved their accounts for 2021-22, confirming an eye-watering loss of £211million.

Liverpool

Andre Agnelli, former Juve chairman and chief architect of the Super League, recently resigned alongside almost the entirety of the board following reports of foul play in the club’s capital gains tax affairs.

The Super League itself suffered a major blow recently when the European Court of Justice ruled that Uefa and Fifa are entitled to punish teams that sign up for breakaway competitions.

But while Maguire suggests that the revival of the Super League is less likely following developments at Juve, the gulf between them and the likes of Liverpool means it is not yet off the table.

The Super League was very much Andre Agnelli’s baby,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“He was the one championed it alongside Liverpool when it first launched and continued to do so when all but three teams had left.

With him no longer at board level at Juventus, it could be that the new board take a more cautious route in championing its threadbare credentials for launching a competition in Europe.

Liverpool

Having said that, Juventus’s biggest fear is that they become an irrelevance in European football due to the continued juggernaut success of the Premier League.

Clubs such as Liverpool are increasing the gaps between themselves and the likes of Juve on the back of increasing broadcasting deals, commercial deals and a sold-out Anfield every single match.
