Finance guru salutes Liverpool as seven-figure Taiwo Awoniyi windfall revealed
Liverpool deserve credit for their policy of implementing sell-on clauses in young players’ contracts.
That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about how the Reds are set to benefit from Taiwo Awoniyi’s move to Nottingham Forest.
Awoniyi, 24, did not make a senior appearance for Liverpool but was on the books at the club from 2015 to 2021.
Forest announced last Saturday (25 June) that they had signed the Nigerian for a club-record fee.
Football Insider revealed that same day that Liverpool were set to be bank £2million from the forward’s £17.2m switch to the Premier League new boys.
Plumley hailed Liverpool for their foresight when negotiating his contract.
“This is becoming commonplace among the bigger clubs with bigger academies,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“The pure numbers of it tell you that you aren’t going to be able to give all those players a chance in your first team.
“If you can generate that talent, nurture it and insert a sell-on clause when you sell the player further down the line, that’s a successful model.
“Ideally, you want the player to break into the first team but this is the next best option. This means you can get a little bit back from them in the long term. It’s just good business practice.”

Awoniyi netted 20 times in 43 appearances for Union Berlin in 2021-22.
He has scored once in four appearances for Nigeria.
