Kieran Maguire salutes Liverpool as £22m outlay confirmed – ‘money well spent’

Most of the £22.1million Liverpool spent on agents in the last 12 months has gone towards fees associated with contract renewals.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about recent figures released by the Football Association.

The FA published yesterday (31 March) the breakdown of how much each English club spent on agents between 2 February 2021 and 31 January 2022.

Premier League sides spent a total of £272.6million for the year, with Liverpool accounting for £22m of that figure.

The Reds were the fourth-biggest spenders on agents in the division despite the fact that eight clubs spent more on transfers in the same period.

Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Harvey Elliott, Virgi Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson have all penned new terms in 2021-22.

And Maguire argues that this is where the bulk of Liverpool’s intermediary spend has come from.

“For Liverpool, I believe this will be contract renewals,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“There were some big renewals of contracts. That is where a significant element of the intermediary fees have been allocated, I imagine.

“If it secures the future of the players who have contributed to them possibly being a quadruple winner this season, it’s money well spent, in my view.”

Liverpool made a £4.8million loss in their last set of annual financial results, with turnover totalling £487m.

The Merseysiders spent £314m on wages in that same period.
