Liverpool work on signing top midfielder in ‘early deal’ – sources

Liverpool want to sign a new top-class central midfielder in the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed midfield is an area in which the club want to strengthen ahead of the new season.

He explained that the new manager will want money to spend on new players, and will have his own ideas on incomings.

Michael Edwards is returning to the club as CEO of Football of Fenway Sports Group, while Richard Hughes will become Liverpool’s new sporting director.

O’Rourke noted that the duo already have targets in mind and will want to bring them to Anfield as soon as possible, with sources suggesting an “early-window signing highly likely”.

He added that the Reds are expected to return to the Champions League next season, which will improve their chances of recruiting their top targets.

Along with a new central midfielder, the Merseyside outfit are targeting a new winger, sources have told Football Insider.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were recently knocked out of this season’s Europa League, but are expected to return to Europe’s premier club competition next time out given their impending top four top flight finish.
