Liverpool set to battle PL rivals for 20-year-old midfielder from Champions League regulars – report
By Derek Smithson
Liverpool and Chelsea are in the race to sign Porto midfielder Ruben Neves, according to a report.
Portuguese outlet A Bola claim that the two Premier League clubs have made contact about the 20-year-old.
The report details that the Portugal giants could sell the youngster this summer and that England is his most likely destination.
Neves already has plenty of European experience under his belt as Porto have reached at least the Champions League group stages in 12 of the past 13 seasons.
The central midfielder has become an important first-team player since he graduated through the academy and made 93 senior appearances in total
He is recognised as a more defensive-minded player and is currently in Portugal’s Under-21 squad that will compete at the European Championships.
Neves slightly struggled last season to make a major impact by making just 18 senior appearances, but has proved his class in the past and is expected to become a mainstay in Portgual’s senior team in the future.
Football Insider verdict:
Neves is an exciting upcoming talent and it’s surprising Porto are willing to let him leaves, especially following the departure of Andre Silva to AC Milan. However, Liverpool should seize the opportunity to sign the 20-year-old as he has huge potential. The central midfielder has represented Portugal all the way up to senior level and the Reds fans should keep a close eye on him during the Under-21s European Championships. He is very composed in possession and could definitely do a job in Liverpool’s midfield. However, Premier League champions Chelsea will provide a major competition and Antonio Conte’s side are an attractive side to join right now.
In other Liverpool transfer news, they are plotting a second attempt to sign a teenage sensation.
