Liverpool news: Finance guru condemns Super League 2.0 as supporters ‘shocked’

The new Champions League format is the “Super League in all but name” and will further entrench the riches of the likes of Liverpool.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about fan opposition to the Uefa-backed overhaul.

The Champions League will welcome four new teams from 2024-25, with the total number of matches set to nearly double under the new format.

The Football Supporters Association‘s Premier League arm called the plans “irresponsible and out of touch” in a statement last Tuesday (12 April).

Greater Champions League TV income will enrich the likes of Liverpool and make it even harder for aspirational clubs to qualify, critics argue.

Plumley claims that it is no wonder to hear supporters register their “shock” at plans that will have the same outcome as the infamous Super League.

“It’s hard to argue with the FSA’s view,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“That setup from 2024 onwards is becoming a Super League in all but name. Everything favours the big clubs. That’s why fans are shocked.

“You can see that the proposals are going to make it more and more difficult to catch up with the likes of Arsenal.

“Even the two extra places that are going to clubs based on historic performance, that is just going to further entrench those advantages.

Liverpool play the first leg of this year’s Champions League semi-final against Villareal next Wednesday (27 April).

Jurgen Klopp’s side have also reached the FA Cup final and trail Man City by one point in the Premier League.
