Medical expert: Joe Gomez may need to wear ‘protective equipment’ after Liverpool latest

Joe Gomez may need to wear some form of protective equipment if he plays for Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday (28 May).

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Gomez, 25, has not featured since he sustained an ankle injury in the 3-1 win over Southampton last Tuesday (17 May).

The defender has twice had ankle surgery in his career, once in 2017-18 and once in 2018-19.

But Jurgen Klopp stressed that his latest setback was merely a case of pain management, as quoted by club media last Friday (20 May).

He has now returned to training ahead of the clash against Real Madrid in Paris.

And Dinnery suggested that he will likely be able to play a role in the European showdown if he wears ankle padding.

Personally, I don’t think he will need to take injections for this one,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“My understanding is that it’s more impact-related.

“The initial fear was that it was on the same ankle that had previously kept him out for so long. But he had two scans and both confirmed that this was just going to be a case of pain management.

“Maybe he will need a little bit of protective equipment around that site, possibly some padding. However, I don’t really see there being a major issue here.”

Gomez has scored once in 21 appearances this season.

Seven of those outings have come in the Champions League.
