Harvey Elliott: Ex-Fifa official ‘expects’ FA to charge Liverpool star after probe update
Keith Hackett has suggested Harvey Elliott will be fined by the FA for celebrating with a flare after helping Liverpool win the League Cup.
The former Fifa and Premier League official, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted a financial punishment and a warning, rather than a suspension, would be the most likely cause of action.
Elliott was pictured celebrating the Reds’ League Cup win over Chelsea last month (27 February) with a flare that was thrown onto the Wembley turf.
As reported by the Daily Mail last Tuesday (1 March), the FA have been in contact with Elliott for his observations of the incident.
Jurgen Klopp “promised” the teenager would not do it again amid the probe into his actions.
Hackett suggested Elliott would have to pay a fine and compared it to similar incidents in European competitions.
Hackett told Football Insider’s Connor Whitley: “There are two courses of action available to the FA.
“A slap across the wrists to say don’t do it again. It might be dependent on his previous record, you never know with these things.
“I would expect him to pay a fine rather than a suspension. Look, he’s a young guy. Don’t turn him against the FA in that sense.
“I think a word of warning over his future conduct. He’s probably already had that from his boss. His boss will have whispered in his ear.
“When I was in Europe as a match delegate and a referee and flares were used, those were very clear, actionable offences for Uefa. They’d pay a fine.”
Elliott recently returned to action after a serious ankle injury.
He came off the bench to play 40 minutes in the League Cup final.
