Liverpool stars to feel the wrath of Jurgen Klopp after ‘strange’ development – pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested the Liverpool defence will receive stern words from Jurgen Klopp after “losing concentration and discipline” against Benfica.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, accused the Reds of “taking their foot off the gas” during the Champions League clash.
Liverpool lined up with a heavily-rotated defence as they advanced to the semi-finals of the competition with a 3-3 draw at Anfield on Wednesday (13 April) – securing a 6-4 win on aggregate.
Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Andy Robertson all sat out ahead of tomorrow’s (16 April) FA Cup semi-final against Man City.
Benfica looked consistently dangerous throughout the tie and took full advantage of the Reds’ high line despite being caught offside on several occasions.
Whelan claimed Klopp “won’t let go” of the “disappointing” display despite Liverpool’s advancement.
“It was a strange night at Anfield, really,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.
“Liverpool seemed to be cruising but they just took their foot off the gas.
“You have to give credit to Benfica, though. They’re a good squad and a good team, and they never gave up.
“They did their homework on Liverpool, clearly.
“With the way Liverpool play, sometimes they’re going to get found out. It’s the Champions League after all.
“The disappointment will be losing that concentration and that discipline. That will be something that Jurgen Klopp won’t let go.”

Liverpool will face Villarreal in the Champions League semi-final.
Klopp’s side can still lift the quadruple this season after winning the League Cup earlier this year.
