Finance guru: Premier League starving Liverpool of TV cash as ‘huge numbers’ explained

An in-house Premier League streaming service would provide a lucrative source of income for Liverpool by hoovering up the “huge number” of games not broadcast by Sky Sports or BT Sport.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Premier League’s domestic TV rights.

Viewers in the UK were able to watch three matches on the final day last Sunday (22 May) despite all 10 games being played simultaneously.

The Athletic reported last Friday (20 May) that the Premier League is concerned that showing too many games would dilute the market and decrease demand.

It is claimed that they have no plans to sell more rights packages in the immediate future.

Liverpool earned £266.1m from media income in 2020-21 and were the most televised team in the top flight this term.

Plumley suggests that the Premier League could put even more money in the Merseysiders’ pocket if they reversed their stance and broadcast every game via their own service.

“This could be a bridge to clubs launching their own streaming services, which is what they ultimately want to do,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“A Premier League streaming service could itself be quite lucrative in the meantime. You have to deal with the current broadcasters first. But we also know they aren’t prepared to throw as much at it as they have in previous years.

“The last deal was rolled over. Covid was a big factor in that.

“An in-house deal could pick up the games that aren’t on TV. There is a huge number that aren’t picked up.

“If it’s a streaming service that doesn’t replace what Sky and BT are doing, you can see that being lucrative.”
