Liverpool summer priority signing revealed – sources

Liverpool are prioritising the signing of a left-sided centre-back in the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that it is an area in which the club have been looking to improve for some time.

Captain Virgil van Dijk has regularly played there under Jurgen Klopp this season, with the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah playing alongside him on the right.

The manager also has Joe Gomez to call upon in that area of his squad, with fellow centre-back Joel Matip having missed the majority of the campaign through injury.

Liverpool identify area to strengthen in summer transfer window

Change will take place in the Anfield dugout this summer, with long-serving manager Klopp leaving at the end of the season.

But movement is also expected in the transfer window, with a new left-sided centre-back high on the club’s list of priorities.

Former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider last month that Van Dijk could leave Anfield this summer.

His exit could force the club into bringing in a new centre-back, but one could be signed regardless of what happens with club captain Van Dijk.

Sources told Football Insider earlier this month that Sporting Lisbon ace Goncalo Inacio, a left-sided centre-back, can be signed by the Reds for £40million this summer.
