Liverpool tipped to complete box-office midfield signing after ‘brilliant’ deal agreed – pundit
Alan Hutton has backed Liverpool to sign Enzo Fernandez as well as Cody Gakpo.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said signing Gakpo does not rule out a move for Fernandez.
According to PSV Eindhoven (26 December), they have reached an agreement with the Reds over the transfer of Gakpo, 23.
The fee for the winger is an initial £37m rising to£ 44m with add-ons, which is a record transfer for the Dutch side.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have also been heavily linked with World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez of Benfica.
On 24 December, sources told this site that Jurgen Klopp is “calling every day” as he works on bringing a midfielder to Anfield in January and Fernandez is high on his list.
The 21-year-old is a top target for the Reds as it becomes increasingly unlikely a January deal for Jude Bellingham will be done.
But the midfielder has a release clause of £105million and Benfica are believed to have rejected an offer of £88m from an unnamed club.
When asked if signing Gakpo will put the Reds off spending big money in January, Hutton told Football Insider: “Not necessarily.
“I think the midfield situation is somewhere they need to improve.

“I think Gakpo is a brilliant signing. I have always liked him. I think he will fit into the Premier League no problem.
“It is an excellent signing but I do not think it blows anything out of the water. I think moving forward he wants to strengthen in midfield so these guys will all be in the mix.“
