Liverpool tipped to gazump Man United to land ‘massive’ deal after confirmed news – pundit

Noel Whelan claimed Liverpool are better “primed for success” than Man United as the rivals battle to attract new ownership.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed bringing the Red Devils on par with their Merseyside foes will cost “a hell of a lot of money”.

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group issued a statement on 7 November confirming that they are open to selling the Anfield club – and are exploring a deal with major US banks.

Meanwhile, Man United confirmed via club media last week (22 November) that the Glazer Family are now exploring a sale of the club.

The Old Trafford club’s last trophy came in 2017 when they won the Europa League, while Liverpool sealed FA Cup and League Cup triumphs just last season.

As per Transfermarkt, the Reds squad has a market value of almost £750million – while Man United’s squad is apparently worth just £633million.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Both have got fantastic history behind them, and fantastic infrastructure.

“They’re not just two of the biggest clubs in England – they’re supported all the way around the world.

“But look, Man United are in transition right now. They’re trying to build a new squad right now with massive debt at the club, and that is going to cost an owner a hell of a lot of money.

“Liverpool are a bit more primed for success. They’ve won trophies even in the last year, and they’ve got some of the best players in the world at the club.

“I’m not sure you can say the same about United.

“I think there will be buyers for both clubs, whether it’s from the US, the Middle East, or right here in the UK.”
