Finance guru tips Liverpool to push for major change in summer talks after £89m reveal

Liverpool will lobby for the reintroduction of the five substitutes rule in order to keep costs down.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the push for the rule change in the Premier League.

The Daily Mail reported last Friday (25 March) that the so-called ‘big six’ will again ask for five changes at the Premier League’s annual AGM in June.

It is understood that they will raise recent research that revealed that top-flight clubs took an £89.2m hit because of injuries in 2020-21.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been one of the most vocal proponents of the five subs rule since it was introduced on a temporary basis in 2019-20.

And Plumley claims that it is no surprise to learn that the Merseysiders plan to throw their weight behind the campaign in the summer.

“You’re always trying to mitigate risks,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Liverpool’s revenue was £487m in 2020-21, so it’s a small dent in the grand scheme of things. However, it is still a cost that that club has to bear.

“If there is an opportunity to mitigate or reduce that risk, you will always look to do that when you can.

“It’s not an enormous percentage of turnover, but it’s money that you can spend elsewhere.

“No club wants injury-related costs. If you could avoid them altogether, you would. But if you can take steps to reduce the risk, you’re going to do it.”
