Liverpool to back out of Yan Diomande deal as alternative signing revealed: ‘Much cheaper option’

Liverpool need to be wary about how long it might take Yan Diomande to settle into the Premier League, according to Keith Wyness.

The former Everton chief executive, speaking to Football Insider, believes Liverpool may look at alternative options in the transfer market.

Diomande has had a breakthrough season at RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, and is being linked with a move to numerous European clubs.

RB Leipzig could demand up to £100million for the 19-year-old, with Liverpool looking to replace the departing Mohamed Salah this summer.

There is set to be a squad rebuild at Liverpool in the transfer window, with left-back Andy Robertson having also announced he will be leaving Anfield at the end of the season.

Yan Diomande ‘may not be the answer’ for Liverpool’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Liverpool could financially afford to sign Diomande.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness states that Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon would be “much cheaper” and could settle in quicker on Merseyside.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Financially they could, there’s no doubt.

“However, they’ve been really bitten with the amounts they paid last summer and they’d have to be very sure about this one. I don’t know enough about Diomande in terms of the character assessment, how he would fit into Liverpool, and what Arne Slot’s got in mind.

“Anthony Gordon’s a much cheaper option than Diomande and might settle well, but he may not be Diomande’s quality.

“Gordon will settle in much quicker, and that’s been part of the issue that the squad has had this year, that a few of them have not settled into the Premier League quickly enough, and that would still be an issue with Diomande.

“They’ve got to be careful about that. But there’s no doubt they could do it financially if they wish to. I’ve got a feeling that they’re going to look for other options, and that Diomande may not be the answer for them this time.”

Liverpool could make surprise move for Tottenham forward

If Liverpool were to not sign either Diomande or Gordon this summer, the club could turn to on-loan Tottenham forward Randal Kolo Muani.

Sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool may look to agree a cut-price deal with PSG for Kolo Muani, who is expected to be sold on a permanent basis by the French club this summer.

The 27-year-old would be a cheaper option for the Reds, but he has not set the Premier League alight with just one goal and one assist this season for Spurs.

Kolo Muani would be seen as a replacement for Hugo Ekitike, who is facing a long spell on the sidelines following an Achilles injury he suffered against PSG in the Champions League.
