Kieran Maguire: Liverpool to cash in as £2.7bn Uefa alliance under threat

Liverpool will cash in if Uefa decide to abandon their alliance with the TEAM Marketing agency.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the relationship between TEAM and European football’s governing body.

TEAM acts as a go-between for Uefa as they negotiate new commercial and broadcast deals in all international markets besides the United States.

They helped broker the latest £2.7billion three-year Champions League broadcast rights deal in the UK.

But, per Sport Business last Wednesday (10 August), the union is under threat as Uefa wants to bring its commercial operations in-house.

Maguire explains that Liverpool, who wanted to quit the Champions League under the terms of Super League last April, could reap the rewards if the TEAM deal is scrapped.

“What Uefa want to do is turn around to all those clubs who reluctantly withdrew from the Super League and tell them that they don’t need that project anymore,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“Uefa think they can deliver increased revenues by marketing their own product.

“Super League is still a threat. It might be a relatively remote one as far English clubs are concerned but it is still a threat to the competitive integrity of football in Europe.

“Uefa have had a kick up the backside after Super League went live, albeit only for 48 hours. Uefa, therefore, want to future-proof the future of their competition through having good commercial deals.

“That will impact positively on the top line of clubs like Liverpool.”
