Kieran Maguire: Liverpool to cash in from ‘fantastic’ £2bn deal – ‘It’s dug them out of a hole’
The Premier League has done brilliantly to maintain the value of its broadcast rights – and the likes of Liverpool will be particularly pleased with the “fantastic” Scandinavian deal.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the top-flight’s global appeal and their success in the media market.
The Premier League announced last Monday (9 May) that it had rolled over its UK radio broadcast deal with the BBC and talkSPORT at the same rate as the previous arrangement.
This is emblematic of a wider trend, with the Premier League by and large upholding its broadcast rights while other top European leagues have faltered.
The deal with Nordic broadcaster NENT, which begins next season, is worth £1.99billion over its six-season lifespan.
Liverpool will hope that the eye-watering contract will see them better the £266.1million they earned in media income last term.
Maguire hailed the Premier League’s negotiating team for helping to line the Merseysiders’ pockets.
“They have done well to maintain the same value,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“If we look at the other big five leagues in Europe, they have all had to take a haircut in terms of their media deals. It is impressive that the Premier League have achieved this.
“The Scandinavian TV deal in particular is absolutely fantastic. It has dug them out of the hole that the Chinese TV deal left.”

Much of Liverpool’s media income last term came from deferred matches in the Covid-hit 2019-20 campaign.
But their success across all competitions this season puts them in a strong position to boost their TV coffers again this season.
