Kieran Maguire: Liverpool to ‘eliminate the competition’ as Tom Werner reveals FFP plan
Liverpool are so keen to tighten Financial Fair Play because doing so will “eliminate the competition” from ambitious rivals.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about recent remarks made by Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo on Wednesday (25 May), Werner admitted: “We’re fighting to strengthen the Financial Fair Play rules.”

The Fenway Sports Group powerbroker explained how Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan sits on the Premier League’s strategic advisory committee and is lobbying to fortify FFP quotas.
Liverpool are one of the biggest revenue generators in world football, which allows them to spend more freely under the terms of profit and sustainability measures.
And Maguire explains that it is in their interest to pull up the ladder behind them to stop other clubs from joining the financial elite.
“They ideally want to eliminate the competition,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“By having rules that restrict spending at other clubs, that de facto improves your position if you have an existing financial advantage.
“That is the logic. You can understand it from a pure business point of view.
“Those clubs that are already in the liferafts will want to strengthen the profit and sustainability rules. It makes it increasingly difficult for those trying to follow them.”

Liverpool will earn £3million if they win the Champions League against Real Madrid in Paris on Saturday (28 May).
