Kieran Maguire: Liverpool to match Man United as ‘£15m’ windfall on the cards

Liverpool will believe they can match Man United’s £15million annual income from overseas exhibition matches.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Merseysiders’ scope to increase their revenue through their non-domestic fanbase.

Per The Times on Monday (19 September), England’s elite clubs want to abolish third and fourth-round FA Cup replays and scale back their commitment to the League Cup.

The likes of Liverpool want to use the space freed up in the footballing calendar to play more friendly matches overseas.

The Reds, like rivals Man United, have an enormous following in regions like America and Asia.

Maguire claims that they could capitalise on this section of their supporter base with more money-spinning exhibition matches,

The big clubs want to play more exhibition matches because they are very lucrative,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

If we look at Man United, they raised somethig like £15m from their overseas tours. Liverpool want to match that. As a big brand, I think that would be their target figure.

There is no doubt that Liverpool could demand premium fees from promoters. Therefore, the more friendlies that are seen, the greater the income as far as the club is concerned.

This has nothing to do with player welfare in reducing the number of domestic matches played. It’s all about increasing the bottom line as far as the Big Six clubs are concerned.
