Liverpool to open Virgil van Dijk talks – sources
Liverpool will hold contract talks with captain Virgil van Dijk at the immediate end of the 2023-24 campaign, sources have told Football Insider.
It is believed negotiations will kick off within a week of the season ending as the Reds plan for life after legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that keeping Van Dijk at Anfield has become the “A1 priority” for the Merseysiders – with his current deal set to expire in 2025.
Sources say the defender, who is 33 in July, is seen by the club as “irreplaceable” despite his advancing years.
Van Dijk has been a mainstay in the Liverpool side after succeeding Jordan Henderson as captain last summer (2023).
He has made 46 appearances across all competitions in the 2023-24 campaign, grabbing four goals and two assists.
Van Dijk new contract is ‘A1 priority’ at Liverpool as talks planned
The Netherlands international, who will be managed by countryman Arne Slot next term, has started in 43 of those outings.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2018 and has won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup during his time at Anfield.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are among the other stars also out of contract in 2025.
Football Insider revealed last month (1 April) that Alexander-Arnold is very keen to extend his contract and sign a mega deal as summer negotiations are planned.
Meanwhile, Salah has been linked with a Saudi Pro League switch in recent weeks.

Liverpool sit third in the Premier League and have wrapped up a return to the Champions League under Slot in the 2024-25 campaign.
The 45-year-old won the Dutch Cup with Feyenoord this term after winning the Eredivisie title last season.
In other news, Liverpool want to sign two Slot favourites this summer.
