Kieran Maguire: Liverpool to cash in from escalating boardroom rivalry as £150m-a-year deal agreed

The Premier League could soon sell more TV rights packages and negotiate an increase from Sky Sports – good news for the likes of Liverpool.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the shifting dynamics in the UK broadcast landscape.

The Daily Mail reported last Friday (1 July) that Sky are worried that Amazon could be set to make a play for greater Premier League rights in the near future.

The news comes after Amazon agreed a £150million-a-year deal for the rights to air 17 Champions League matches per season in the 2024 to 2027 cycle, as relayed by The Athletic last Saturday (2 July).

Liverpool are one of the biggest earners in terms of media revenue in the Premier League and raked in £266.1m in 2020-21, the last financial year on record.

Maguire suggests that, rather than pinching some of Sky’s matches, Amazon could instead purchase the rights for some of the remaining fixtures which unbroadcast in the UK.

The spreadsheet expert explained why this could lead to a spike in media cash for top-flight sides like Liverpool.

“I think there is scope for a small bump domestically,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“Remember, we are now in an environment in which the value of international rights exceeds the domestic rights. When you have international rights, you get all 380 matches.

“Sky have been good for the Premier League and the Premier League have been good for Sky. I don’t think either of those parties will want that relationship to end.

“What could happen is perhaps the Premier League might sell one or two new packages. Presently, it’s only 200 out of 380 that are broadcast domestically. “
