Finance guru: Liverpool to reach ‘huge audience’ as new ‘£2m-a-year’ deal revealed
Liverpool will continue to reach a “huge audience” through the Premier League’s modest new radio broadcast deal.
That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the new contract with BBC and talkSPORT.
The Premier League announced last Monday (9 May) that it has sold all seven of its rights packages in a three-year deal.
The terms of the arrangement have been rolled over from the previous cycle, which ends at the close of the current season.
Liverpool’s media income accounted for £266.1million of their £487m turnover in 2020-21.
Plumley suggested that the radio deal will likely be worth around £2m-a-year in total.
“Numbers-wise, there are no exact figures available,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“It goes into the central commercial pot, although other things are lumped in there as well. I’d be surprised if it was worth more than £2m per season.
“It pales into insignificance compared to the TV deal, but they have done well to roll it over when everyone is tightening their belts.
“The wider appeal with the radio is that it’s less about finance and more about engaging with a huge audience that are not Sky Sports subscribers. A lot of people still consume football this way.”

Liverpool will move to within one point of league leaders Man City with victory over Southampton on Tuesday (17 May).
The FA Cup and League Cup champions also take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final next Saturday (28 May).
