Liverpool told to launch ‘big-money’ Bundesliga raid after Sky’s Jamal Musiala reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Liverpool must bite the bullet and launch bids for Bundesliga midfield duo Jude Bellingham and Jamal Musiala.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted any “big-money” fee for the two 19-year-olds would be offset by the longevity they would bring to Anfield.

According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Pletternberg (4 October), Liverpool are “interested” in signing Musiala – although he is currently reluctant to leave Bayern Munich.

The former Chelsea and Southampton midfielder has notched seven goals and six assists in 12 games this season.

Football Insider revealed on (4 October) that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are willing to fund an A-list acquisition in January should Jurgen Klopp and the recruitment team source the right player.

It is believed that Bellingham is also a top target for the Reds going into the new year and they are already laying the groundwork for what would be a potential club-record deal.

Whelan backed Liverpool to look to younger stars in order to replace aging midfielders like Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Thiago Alcantara.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “This is the area at Liverpool where you have a lot of players in their early 30s.

“It’s something they need to get right in the transfer window.

“When you’re looking at 19-year-olds like Musiala and Bellingham – these two can be at the club for the next five years, at least.

“When you look at that over a five-year contract and divide the transfer fee up – it actually becomes a much more reasonable amount.

“You may as well spend the big money now on young players so you know you won’t be spending it year-on-year to replace these older players.

“It makes complete sense on the business end to go out and spend big money on those two midfielders.”
