Liverpool told to sign new ‘Steven Gerrard’ after midfielder claim – pundit
Alex McLeish has suggested Liverpool need to sign a new “Steven Gerrard” after a lack of goals from midfielders during the 2021/22 campaign.
The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the Reds’ current midfield options are “quite safe”.
Speaking to BT Sport (28 May), Steven Gerrard claimed the Reds “need” to add a goalscoring midfielder to their ranks as they are too “reliant” on their front three.

Fabinho was the Reds’ top-scoring midfielder last season with eight goals.
McLeish suggested Liverpool should look to sign a midfielder in the same mould as Gerrard.
“I think they should re-sign Steven Gerrard,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“Stevie made a great living out of coming from defensive areas and doing his job against the ball. There were some marvellous long-range strikes and things.
“That is a feature that’s a wee bit lost in the modern game. The amount of times I’ve been watching a game and you just see people and say: ‘Shoot, for goodness sake. Shoot.’
“If you don’t shoot, you don’t score. When I was at Rangers we had guys like Barry Ferguson scoring from long range and other guys doing the same.
“Possibly Liverpool need more goals from other outlets. It’s easier said than done. A new midfielder? Possibly. A lot of their midfielders are quite safe. Henderson gets a couple of goals now and again but mostly it’s the strikers.”

Gerrard netted 185 times in 709 appearances for Liverpool after breaking through the youth ranks.
After Fabinho, Naby Keita (four) was the next highest-scoring central midfielder at Anfield.
