Liverpool told to submit ‘next level’ midfielder bid after Steven Gerrard claim – pundit
Alan Hutton has tipped Liverpool to try and sign a “next level” midfielder this summer after a disappointing end to the season.
The former Scotland international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the midfield is “probably the weakest part” of Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Speaking to BT Sport after the Champions League final (28 May), Steven Gerrard claimed the Reds “need” a goalscoring midfielder as they are too “reliant” on their front three.

Hutton admitted the Reds’ current options are unlikely to take Klopp’s men to the “next level”.
As such, he suggested the German manager would explore potential options over the summer.
Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It seems like a lot of people are questioning the midfield at this moment in time. To a certain extent, of course, you would agree.
“Henderson, as good as he is, he’s not going to score you 10-plus goals a season. Fabinho is obviously more defensive, Thiago is the guy that is going to link up that midfield and make something happen.
“Moving forward, it’s probably the weakest part of the team. Defensively, I think they’re strong. Up front they’re strong, so if you want to pick holes in it and magnify it, then yeah, possibly midfield.
“I think that could take them to the next level. If you run through the midfielders: Naby Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, these kind of guys, Curtis Jones is still young. Are they the guys who are going to be taking them to the next level? Probably not.

“So I think it’s probably a position Jurgen Klopp is looking to bring in, to take them to where they can challenge at the top level.”
Fabinho was Liverpool’s top-scoring midfielder with eight goals during the 2021/22 campaign.
