Diogo Jota cited as Liverpool named in pursuit of red-hot forward – ‘better all-round player’, says pundit

Paul Robinson has told Liverpool not to pursue a move for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo – as he’s not as good as Diogo Jota.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the 23-year-old would not be “an improvement” on the Reds current attacking options.

Gakpo has been one of the standout players in Europe this season.

Speaking to Dutch outlet NOS (12 November), the Netherlands international revealed his intention to leave PSV Eindhoven next summer.

The forward named Liverpool, Man United, Man City, Real Madrid and Barcelona as clubs he would love to play for.

Gakpo has three-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract.

When asked by Football Insider Jurgen Klopp’s side should make a move for the prolific goalscorer next year, Robinson said: “No.

“Would Gakpo be an improvement on what they have already got? I don’t think so. If you put him into that squad now he would not be the first choice. He would not be your first pick.

Liverpool

“Do Liverpool need to sign a squad player? There is other positions in the squad that need addressing, let’s have it right.

They should sign to improve their XI. Gakpo is a very good player but I’m not sure he is a better than the forwards at Liverpool. He gets your goals but I think the likes of [Diogo] Jota and [Mohamed] Salah are brilliant and better all-round players.”
