Liverpool transfer news: Big-money Harvey Elliott claim issued after ‘unlikely’ Klopp reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones could save Liverpool millions in upcoming transfer windows.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the Reds do need to “spend money” to strengthen but that the club’s younger stars could also step up.

As quoted by Sky Sports on Wednesday (16 March), Jurgen Klopp revealed it is “unlikely” the squad will remain the same over the summer.

He insisted the club must “prepare” for the future, specifically in terms of replacing the older players in the squad.

However, Whelan suggested some positions are already covered by young talent already at Anfield.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think that’s why Shaqiri went, because of Harvey Elliott.

“They knew they had that backup and the player there that could probably give you just as much, if not more, than Shaqiri could.

“He’s of better quality and younger, so they didn’t have to go and spend money in that department.

“Curtis Jones, he’s been on the fringes for the past three years now. He’s shown what a good player he is, still getting utilised and used as a substitute. Even sometimes starting when it comes to cup games.

“The trust is there from the manager in the player. There are areas where I don’t think you need to spend on.

“Every now and again, you look at the ages of certain players but look at Milner. Still going strong, he’ll probably sign another contract.

“Jordan Henderson, they trust in him, an older player, and gave him a new contract.

“It goes to show that you still need these older heads to be successful. They still don’t look out of place. They still don’t look like they’re losing any of that energy or desire.

“At some point, yes, they’re going to have to look to the younger players that have been coming through. They’ve been nurturing them for years. for three years.

“But I still believe that you’ve got to spend money if you’re going to keep up with Manchester City and ahead of Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham.

“You’ve still got to look for that future. Buy players that are younger, that will be there in five years.”
