Liverpool transfer news: Whelan issues verdict on Man United hijacking Carvalho deal

Fabio Carvalho should reject the advances of Man United and join Liverpool, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed he would be “very surprised” if the 19-year-old chose to join the Red Devils over the Merseysiders.

According to the Daily Star (19 February), Man United have sent scouts to watch Carvalho on three occasions and are preparing to gazump Liverpool with a summer bid.

The report claims Jurgen Klopp’s side have already agreed a fee for the youngster with Fulham after the two clubs ran out of time to seal a January move.

A Liverpool source has told Football Insider that new talks are being held this month with Fulham over a deal for Carvalho.

Whelan claimed an Anfield switch would prove “a much more healthy atmosphere to be playing your football in”.

“That would be very cheeky from Man United,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“But if I was Carvalho, I’d much rather play for Liverpool than Man United – that’s just how it is.

“There are a lot of deep-rooted problems at Man United which need to be resolved, and that starts at the top.

“When you look at how Liverpool are run as a club, everything’s in place and it’s a very tight ship – which is a much more healthy atmosphere to be playing your football in.

“Liverpool have come in and shown interest in the player, he was close to joining. I’d be very surprised if he were to turn his nose up at joining them in favour of a move to Man United.

Ralf Rangnick’s side have a four-point buffer to fifth-place West Ham following their away win at Leeds yesterday (20 February).

Meanwhile, Liverpool are just six points away from leaders Man City with a game in hand.
