Liverpool urged to complete signing of Joe Gomez replacement after source’s reveal – pundit

Frank McAvennie has claimed Liverpool need to replace Joe Gomez with a “top centre-half”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted the Reds need another “top drawer” player alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool have had their fair share of defensive problems this season and have massively struggled with injuries and Gomez is the latest defender to return to the treatment table.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have conceded 31 Premier League goals this season, already higher than their total of 26 in the 2021-22 season.

Their latest defeat, a 1-0 loss to relegation threatened Bournemouth further proved the need for defensive reinforcements at Anfield.

On 3 March, Football Insider revealed that RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol is a target for Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead of the summer window.

The 21-year-old is on the radar of the Merseysiders after an impressive World Cup for Croatia.

McAvennie urged Klopp to add another central defender in the summer window.

They need another top drawer centre-half to go with Van Dijk,” he told Football Insider.

The boys around him, the likes of Gomez, are doing alright. But they need that consistency and that is what top centre-halves give you.

I think these boys are alright for two games and then they start daydreaming. If Van Dijk gets injured you saw what happened they were all over the place. I think they need that.
