Liverpool v Everton: This may be real reason Anthony Gordon robbed of penalty as controversy analysed – Robinson

Paul Robinson has slammed referee Stuart Attwell for not awarding Everton winger Anthony Gordon a penalty against Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the second half incident involving the 21-year-old was “an absolute nailed on penalty.”

As shown on Sky Sports (25 April), Gordon went down under the challenge of Joel Matip in the second half of Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Anfield on Sunday.

However, referee Stuart Attwell decided not to award a penalty and VAR official Darren England deemed there not to have been a clear and obvious error.

Robinson believes Gordon’s actions earlier in the game influenced the referee’s decision.

“It’s an absolute nailed on penalty,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“How he hasn’t given that I don’t know. He went to put the whistle to mouth and then changed his mind.

“He was given credit for thinking about his decision but I just think he bottled it at Anfield. I cannot see how that’s not a penalty.

“The only reason I can see for him not giving it is because Gordon dived in the first half. Gordon goes down too easily and is too theatrical. It doesn’t take much to send him over. He has got a reputation for it. He was rightfully booked in the first half because that wasn’t a penalty.

“That must have been in the referee’s mind when it came to the second half. It’s the only reason for not giving that penalty. He shot himself in the foot by diving in the first half.

“But Matip stood on his foot and pushed him over. It was a stonewall penalty.”
