Kieran Maguire: Liverpool want legal action taken after ‘huge’ development in Singapore

Liverpool have a “huge interest” in the Asia-Pacific region and will be delighted the Premier League are stepping up their efforts to combat broadcast piracy in the region.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest news from behind the scenes at Premier League HQ.

A source told this site on Wednesday (28 December) that the top flight is planning a massive crackdown on broadcast piracy in the Asia-Pacific with an expansion of its Singapore-based IP rights enforcement office.

Liverpool, who are currently involved in an anti-piracy campaign in the region, are one of the Asia-Pacific’s most popular clubs and visited both Singapore and Thailand during pre-season.

Maguire explained why the Merseysiders will therefore be fully onboard with the Premier League’s efforts to combat illegal streaming.

The Premier League has been very successful in terms of its international rights,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

The overseas rights now exceed the domestic ones, so it’s perfectly understandable that they want to protect their intellectual property and reduce the opportunities for piracy.

For a club such as Liverpool, which has a huge interest in the Asia-Pacific region, you can understand why they are keen for their broadcast partners to be protected.

It’s always going to be a challenge given that the cost of the legitimate broadcast package tends to be quite high. That can put off either buying or continuing to subscribe.

That, therefore, creates an opportunity an opportunity for the pirates to fill that gap with a cheaper and more erratic product.
